How to find a commercial property

Commercial property fan Dolf de Roos

A NZ Property Investor magazine survey found that between half and quarter of readers would seriously consider investing in commercial property.

This was particularly the case for those who already have a sizeable residential portfolio.

But commercial property is a different beast to residential investment and there are other issues to consider when selecting an investment.

In this guide, our journalist runs through some of the key things to look for and provide readers with some examples of recent sales.

Commercial property has primarily been seen as more of an income generating investment for many people rather than something that is going to provide a big capital gain.

A good example of this are the property syndications which are almost solely sold around their yield.

That’s not to say capital gains aren’t possible: indeed they are.

This was well-canvased in NZ Property Investor magazine last year when Dolf de Roos – who is a big advocate of commercial property - headlined the NZ Property Investors’ Federation conference.
