Dream team: 120 properties in 12 years

Seeking inspiration? Investors need look no further than a young Hawkes Bay couple who have built a portfolio of 120 properties in just 12 years.

Investor dream team couple Shannon and Hayley Tawhiti hail from Hawkes Bay

Shannon and Hayley Tawhiti, who are profiled in this month’s NZ Property Investor magazine, are thought to be among the country’s wealthiest private residential property investors.

The couple bought their first property in Hastings for $120,000 in 2004. Fast-forward 12 years and they have built a net worth of well over $20 million.

Still in their early 30s, the high school sweethearts started in property at a young age and were serious from the get-go.

While neither came from a wealthy family, both credit their hard-working parents with passing on the work ethic they have needed to build their property empire in a relatively short time.

It is that work ethic that saw them up ladders at 9pm at night after their working day, painting their rental property ceilings, in their 20s – while their mates were partying or frittering away their discretionary income.

They have had some tough times along the way, but now they have reached a point where they fee; they can ease up a bit and enjoy life some more.

While they could retire, they won’t as they remain passionate about what they do.

To that end, the couple, who prefer to stay out of the limelight, have decided to share their story with fellow investors.

In this month’s NZ Property Investor magazine, they reveal the details of how they built their property empire and the lessons they have learnt along the way.
