Struggle street to property baron

Actor Ben Mitchell may be famed for his role as Dr TK Samuels on Shortland Street, but it is his lesser-known role as an established property investor that really drives him.

Shortland Street actor Ben Mitchell

He will do anything for a dollar. He’s worked as an apple-picker, a waiter and a boxer. He’s bought software that picks winning horses and considered all manner of franchises and shares.

“I’m a hustler. I’m always up for using my assets, whatever they are,” Ben, who is profiled in this month’s NZ Property Investor magazine, said.

His role on Shortland Street provides job security and a “stupid” amount of money, but it is property investment that rocks his boat.

“I’ve found the language of success and I love taking control of my financial life. It really suits my personality.”

As a result, he has built up a multi-million dollar property portfolio since 2008 – and he has big plans for his future investing.

Ben’s top tips for aspiring investors are:

• Consider going into a joint venture with friends.
• Get comfortable talking about money.
• Don’t think you’re too stupid to understand finance.
• Once you’ve done your research, take action.
• Put together a team of experts to work with.
• Do the numbers – properly not roughly.
• Take your personality out of it and think strategically.
