Dispute hinders development

A $35-million resthome and hospital planned for Aidanfield has been delayed because of continuing problems at the new Christchurch suburb.

Ryman Corporation has committed to building a 50-bed hospital, a 30-bed resthome, 80 independent apartments and 50 serviced apartments in the subdivision near Halswell.

However, a dispute between Environment Canterbury and the Christchurch City Council has left all the section owners facing uncertainty.

Ryman managing director Kevin Hickman this week confirmed the company had hoped to have already started work at the site.

However, it was now facing substantial delays.

The bulk of the subdivision has no legal stormwater system. The city council, which is responsible for the system, failed to obtain resource consent before building began at the subdivision due to delays in hearing the issue.

The consent application has now been heard. Independent commissioners are expected to release their decision within a month.
