Five-star tourist apartments planned

A $5 million, five-star, 20-apartment development has been proposed for George St in north Dunedin to cater for short-to-medium stay travellers.

Wednesday, January 12th 2005

Developers Neville and Sandra Butcher said that subject to the response to resource consent applications, being lodged and advertised this week with the Dunedin City Council, construction of the facility could potentially begin by the end of the year and the apartments could be operational by the end of 2006.

At present, a six-bedroom flat is on the 1425sq m site and would eventually be demolished to make way for the four-storey apartments which would be terraced over five levels.

"The site is a quiet rear section in George St and its elevation gives it superb views over the university toward the harbour and the peninsula," Mr Butcher said when contacted yesterday.

The Bluestone Suites and Apartments, designed by architect Philip Gilchrist, would be fully self-contained and would employ three full-time management staff and six part-time cleaners, Mr Butcher said.
