Married? You should be - for your bank balance

If you want to get rich, get married and stay that way.

If you split up, get married again - fast.

That is the upshot of an Australian study of home ownership trends, which a Government agency in Wellington says mirrors trends in this country.

Getting divorced or separated has dire consequences for household wealth and home ownership levels, the study by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute has found.

But divorcees who remarry are just as likely to recover their home ownership wealth as those who never split up in the first place.

Statistics NZ figures show 21,420 New Zealanders married last year and 10,491 got divorced.
