Manukau to become country's second biggest city

Manukau is predicted to overtake Christchurch as New Zealand's second largest city this year - a year marked by significant growth and change for the region.

A new state secondary school opens in Manurewa, substantial progress will be made on several community projects including the $45 million TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre, the preferred route for the Eastern Corridor is expected to be finalised and major improvements will be carried out at Middlemore Hospital.

Of prime concern to crime-weary residents will be a new police plan named ADVANCE to reduce the region's spiralling crime rate.
