Christchurch house market takes off

The Christchurch housing market has taken off, with the rental market leading the way, but some developers are already warning of overheating.

Canterbury Property Investors' Association president Martin Evans said the price of some rental properties had risen 20 percent in suburbs such as Bishopdale, Avonhead and Burnside.

Christchurch bucked the national trend to record a 3 percent rise in the median house price in December.
