Wondering about letting fee

Sonam asks:
(updated on Tuesday, November 13th 2012)

I'm looking at a two-bedroom house for rent. I just want to know how much the letting fees should be because they are charging me $287.

Our Experts Answer:

I deduce from your $287 charge that your normal weekly rent is around $250. For agents which charge a letting fee, the usual amount is the equivalent of one week’s rent plus GST. If you think that is a bit steep, you may like to seek out a property manager who doesn’t charge a letting fee. Vote with your feet!
