The National Water Sports Centre is going to be a very impressive, very large facility in which competitive water sports can be viewed. It’s being designed by Warren and Mahoney, a top NZ architectural firm and we are doing the planning. It is an $8 million facility that will be supported and financed by central and local government, and managed by Yachting New Zealand.
The Centre will be used as the high performance base for Yachting New Zealand, while providing storage opportunities for other water based activities. The proposed facility is to be established under The Strand (being the beachfront road that wraps along the coast of central Takapuna) with offices fronting Takapuna Beach Reserve. The pavilion itself is designed to be symbolic of sail sports with a light, aerodynamic design. It will be an impressive addition to Takapuna and act as a catalyst for change within this environment; and we are very excited about it.
Alongside the Water Sports Centre the Council has earmarked Takapuna as a centre of growth and has long term plans to provide for a wharf to accommodate passenger ferries and provide for additional growth in the area.
