I want to run my business from home. What are the rules around this?

Our Experts Answer:

Most Councils allow people to operate small scale business’ from home. However, there are a number of key rules relating to small scale home based employment activities and the scale of such activity.

Each District plan is different and we would advise that you contact your local Council for the specific rules relating to your site and zone.

However, the main rules are generally as follows:

Residential in Nature and Staff: The person engaged in the activity is usually required to live on the site and may employ one other person.

Restrictions on Outdoor Activities: All manufacturing, altering, repairing, dismantling or processing of any materials, goods or articles is usually required to be carried out within a building.

Retailing: Displaying, selling and/or hiring of goods (whether made or manufactured on the site or not) to the public is not permitted unless a resource consent is obtained.
