Finding a property manager

Question from elaine updated on 9th March 2007:

Is there a professional property managers association in NZ? I have a specific question as to how property inspections are done. I just hired a property manager who was suppose to do a property inspection after the old tenant moved out. She checked paint and carpet conditions and general cleanliness but did not checked if appliances (fridge, dishwasher, etc) were working. She left it for new tenants to check. Makes no sense. I am trying to find out if there any guidelines from a professional organization on how to properly inspect a property.

Our expert responded:

There are two professional property management associations in New Zealand.

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand REINZ
National Office: PO Box 5663, Auckland
Phone 09 356 1755
Fax 09 379 8471
Email reinz@reinz.co.nz

Independent Property Managers Association IPMA
PO Box 20039, Bishopdale, Christchurch
Phone 03 357 9243
Fax 03 358 3914
Email amin@nzpif.org.nz

Currently, there is no government regulation of professional property managers, but either of the above should be able to help you find a good property inspector.
