Council fights to protect Taupo from subsidence

Taupo district councillors, council officers and international experts are heading to Hamilton to seek tougher rules to protect Taupo from subsidence caused by geothermal extraction.

Sunday, February 15th 2004

The Taupo District Council will present its case over seven days at an Environment Waikato public hearing of submissions to its proposed Regional Plan and Regional Policy Statement.

Council legal officer Chris Gilbert says the plans are extremely important because they set the future regulatory framework for management of geothermal extraction.

He says the district council will present some compelling scientific evidence to support its call for the rules to be tightened to protect Taupo township from the adverse effects of geothermal extraction.
